Controls Categories

Controls Categories were introduced with the SSL V6.0 and LUNA V2.0 Technical Requirements to create a common language for the integral controls available with a lighting product. Today, manufacturers use a wide range of terms to describe the same functionality, which can slow down the construction process by requiring specifiers and reviewers to sift through spec sheets to make sense of the terminology.

With Controls Categories, we’ve streamlined the work by placing common controls capabilities into clear categories. Each category connects an energy-saving controls capability to a specific portion of a manufacturer’s model number: a Controls Options Code. During the DLC review process, each Controls Options Code is assigned a Controls Category, which is then shown on the QPL. When energy efficiency programs develop incentives around advanced lighting controls, Controls Categories take the headache out of specifying products, calculating savings, and reviewing applications.

By creating a common language around integral controls, we are supporting more incentives for controls and the energy savings brought by wider adoption of controls. When the presence and capabilities of integral controls are easier to verify, energy efficiency programs are better able to include incentives for these products in their portfolios.
